RESUMO

In this study, a new nanocomposite of hydroxyapatite (HA)/Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) was successfully formed via a facile co-precipitation method and applied to adsorb three anionic dyes of alizarin red S (ARS), Congo red (CR), and reactive red 120 (RR120) differing in the number of SO3- groups from aqueous solution. Based on a combination of characterization analysis and adsorption experiments, HA/Mg-Al LDH nanocomposite showed better adsorption performance than HA and Mg-Al LDH. Using XRD and TEM analyses, the crystallinity and the presence of nanoparticles were confirmed. According to the SEM investigation, the Mg-Al LDH layers in the nanocomposite structure were delaminated, while HA nanorods were formed at the surface of Mg-Al LDH nanoparticles. The higher BET surface area of the novel HA/Mg-Al LDH nanocomposite compared to HA and Mg-Al LDH provided its superior adsorption performance. Considering an effective amount of adsorbent dosage, pH 5 was selected as the optimum pH for each of the three dye solutions. According to the results from the study of contact time and initial concentration, the pseudo-second-order kinetic (R2 = 0.9987, 0.9951, and 0.9922) and Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9873, 0.9956, and 0.9727) best fitted the data for ARS, CR, and RR120, respectively. Anionic dyes with different numbers of SO3- groups demonstrated distinct adsorption mechanisms for HA and Mg-Al LDH nanoparticles, indicating that the adsorption capacity is influenced by the number of SO3- groups, with HA/Mg-Al LDH nanocomposite offering superior performance toward dyes with higher numbers of SO3- groups. Furthermore, ΔH° less than 40 kJ/mol, positive ΔS°, and negative ΔG° accompanied by the mechanism clarifying show physical spontaneous adsorption without an external source of energy and increase the randomness of the process during the adsorption, respectively. Finally, the regeneration study demonstrated that the nanocomposite could be utilized for multiple adsorption-desorption cycles, proposing the HA/Mg-Al LDH as an economically and environmentally friendly adsorbent in the adsorption of anionic dyes in water treatment processes.

RESUMO

A cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB)-modified peanut husk pretreated with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) was developed and applied as an adsorbent for the removal of Congo red (CR) in aqueous solution. The surface morphology and physicochemical characteristics of the adsorbent labelled as PNK-CTAB were assessed using well-established analytical techniques. The efficiency of PNK-CTAB was assessed via the batch adsorption method using distilled water, tap water and river water as aqueous medium. Results of the batch study showed that the adsorption capacity of PNK-CTAB could reach 70.5 mg g-1 at 313 K due to its improved surface properties and functionalities. Furthermore, the uptake of CR onto PNK-CTAB was found to be best described by the Elovich model thus suggesting adsorption on a heterogeneous surface, whereas fitting of intraparticle diffusion model indicated the significant role of mass transfer mechanism in the process. The equilibrium data was found to be well described by Langmuir, Temkin and Freundlich models albeit the latter was the best fit. Further analysis of the associated thermodynamics indicated the adsorption process to be endothermic, spontaneous in nature and likely mediated by physisorption processes. The excellent adsorption efficiency of PNK-CTAB toward CR within a wide pH range, negligible influence of some commonly occurring salts, good reusability efficiency, low cost (as confirmed by its cost analysis) and its ability to reduce the cytotoxicity of CR towards human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells suggest the good prospects of this adsorbent for practical applications.

RESUMO

Herein, ethylene glycol (EG)-modified Zn/Cu hydroxy double salts (HDS) were synthesized using a facile synthetic approach. The formation of layered structure and presence of EG in the interlayer region were confirmed using PXRD and FTIR techniques. Furthermore, XPS analysis was used to confirm presence of metal ions in synthesized HDS. The surface area and pore size diameter of the HDS was found to be 32.30 m2 g-1 and 2.22 nm, respectively, using BET. The role of HDS was evaluated for its potential application as a sorbent for Congo red (CR) dye uptake. Batch studies were conducted to examine the impact of key variables, i.e., pH, time, adsorbent dosage and dye concentration on adsorption efficiency of HDS. Linear-nonlinear isotherm and kinetic models were employed for detailed analysis of experimental data. Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were subsequently utilized to fit equilibrium data, among which Langmuir demonstrated to be most accurate. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity estimated using Langmuir model was computed to be 181.81 mg g-1. The kinetic data follows pseudo-second-order model having good R2 value (0.999). Additionally, thermodynamic study suggested spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption process having reusability up to 5 cycles with removal efficiency more than 85%.

RESUMO

In this study, bare zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) have been modified using polyethylene glycol (PEG) of various molecular weight in a facile technique. The synthesized nZVI modified with PEG, M.W. of 600 and 6000 was denoted by nZVI-PEG600 and nZVI-PEG6000, respectively, and compared their catalytic activity towards the reductive degradation of Congo red (CR) using NaBH4.The existence of PEG layer surrounds the nZVI core was confirmed by several characterization tools, such as XRD, FTIR, FESEM and TEM. Herein, both nZVI-PEG600 and nZVI-PEG6000 exhibited remarkable removal efficiencies of 89.6% and 99.2% within 14 min of reaction time. The optimum reaction parameters were found to be as follows: 0.2 g L-1 catalyst dose and initial dye concentration of 2 × 10-5 molL-1 etc. Kinetic studies of dye degradation were investigated which follow pseudo-1st-order kinetics. The TOC analysis confirmed the complete mineralization of CR dye by nZVI-PEG6000 nanocatalyst. GCMS analysis of plausible degraded products was performed to elucidate a probable mechanistic pathway of CR degradation. Further, we have investigated the degradation of two anionic dyes mixture, i.e., CR and methyl orange (MO) using best catalyst, i.e., nZVI-PEG6000.

RESUMO

Consideration is now being given to the use of metal coagulants to remove turbidity from drinking water and wastewater. Concerns about the long-term impact of non-biodegradable sludge on human health and the potential contamination of aquatic systems are gaining popularity. Recently, alternative biocoagulants have been suggested to address these concerns. In this study, using a 1 M sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, the active coagulating agent was extracted from Pinus halepensis Mill. Seed, and used for the first time to remove Congo red dye, the influence of numerous factors on dye removal was evaluated in order to make comparisons with conventional coagulants. The application of biocoagulant was shown to be very successful, with coagulant dosages ranging from 3 to 12 mL L-1 achieving up to 80% dye removal and yielding 28 mL L-1 of sludge. It was also found that biocoagulant is extremely pH sensitive with an optimum operating pH of 3. Ferric chloride, on the other hand, achieved similar removal rate with higher sludge production (46 mL L-1) under the same conditions. A Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and proximate composition analysis were undertaken to determine qualitatively the potential active coagulant ingredient in the seeds and suggested the involvement of proteins in the coagulation-flocculation mechanism. The evaluation criteria of the Support vector machine_Gray wolf optimizer model in terms of statistical coefficients and errors reveals quite interesting results and demonstrates the performance of the model, with statistical coefficients close to 1 (R = 0.9998, R2 = 0.9995 and R2 adj = 0.9995) and minimal statistical errors (RMSE = 0.5813, MSE = 0.3379, EPM = 0 0.9808, ESP = 0.9677 and MAE = 0.2382). The study findings demonstrate that Pinus halepensis Mill. Seed extract might be a novel, environmentally friendly, and easily available coagulant for water and wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Owing to the toxicity and difficulty in degradation, how to the effective separation for the residual dyes in the aqueous solution is still an issue with great challenge in the area of environmental protection. Now, to high-efficiency removal of organic dyes from the aqueous solution, we design a unique AlOOH/CoFe2O4 adsorbent with porous CoFe2O4 nanoparticles embedded on the AlOOH fibers using a simple hydrothermal technique and calcination process. The structural properties and surface characteristics of the AlOOH/CoFe2O4 composites are detailedly analyzed by XRD, FTIR, XPS, TEM and SEM. Here, the high SBET and specific porous structure are beneficial to improve the adsorption performance of AlOOH/CoFe2O4 adsorbents. Especially, when the molar ratio of AlOOH to CoFe2O4 in the AlOOH/CoFe2O4 fibers is 1:1, an optimal performance on adsorbing anionic Congo red (CR) and cationic methyl green (MG) dyes can be obtained at pH = 6.29, where the corresponding maximum adsorption capacities reach up to 565.0 and 423.7 mg g-1, respectively. Factors leading to the change in the ability of adsorbing CR and MG dyes are systematically discussed, including contact time, temperature, initial concentrations, and pH values of the solutions. Meanwhile, the uptake of CR and MG dyes can best conform to Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic analysis verifies that the dye adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Moreover, from the point view of practical application, the good reusability further makes the as-synthesized magnetic AlOOH/CoFe2O4 composite be a perfect adsorbent with efficiently removing both anionic and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

RESUMO

The current work explores the adsorptive efficiency of carbon nanospheres (CNSs) derived from oil palm leaves (OPL) that are a source of biowaste. CNSs were synthesized at 400, 600, 800 and 1000 °C, and those obtained at 1000 °C demonstrated maximum removal efficiency of ~91% for malachite green (MG). Physicochemical and microscopic characteristics were analysed by FESEM, TEM, FTIR, Raman, TGA and XPS studies. The presence of surface oxygen sites and the porosity of CNSs synergistically influenced the speed of removal of MG, brilliant green (BG) and Congo red (CR) dyes. With a minimal adsorbent dosage (1 mg) and minimum contact time (10 min), and under different pH conditions, adsorption was efficient and cost-effective (nearly 99, 91 and 88% for BG, MG and CR, respectively). The maximum adsorption capacities of OPL-based CNSs for BG were 500 and 104.16 mg/g for MG and 25.77 mg/g for CR. Adsorption isotherms (Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin) and kinetics models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and Elovich) for the adsorption processes of all three dyes on the CNSs were explored in detail. BG and CR adsorption the Freundlich isotherm best, while MG showed a best fit to the Temkin model. Adsorption kinetics of all three dyes followed a pseudo-second-order model. A reusability study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of CNSs in removing the MG dye and showed ~92% efficiency even after several cycles. Highly efficient CNSs with surface oxygen groups and speedy removal of organic dyes within 10 min by CNSs are highlighted in this paper.

RESUMO

Elaeagnus angustifolia Linnaeus is a medicinal plant and its fruit has pharmacological activity such as antiinflammatory, antiedema, antinociceptive, and muscle relaxant functions, etc. Two acidic homogeneous polysaccharides (EAP-H-a1 and EAP-H-a2) were isolated from the fruits of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. through DEAE-52 and Sephadex G-75 column chromatography, and the physicochemical, structural properties, and biological activities of the polysaccharides were investigated. Both EAP-H-a1 and EAP-H-a2 were composed of Rha, Ara, Xyl, Glc, and Gal with the molar ratios of 13.7:20.5:23.3:8.8:33.4 and 24.8:19.7:8.2:8.4:38.6, respectively, and with the molecular weights of 705.796 kDa and 439.852 kDa, respectively. The results obtained from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the polysaccharide nature of the isolated substances. Congo red assay confirmed the existence of a triple-helix structure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that EAP-H-a1 and EAP-H-a2 had irregular fibrous, filament-like surfaces; and both had crystalline and amorphous structures. Bioactivity analysis showed that the crude polysaccharide, EAP-H-a1, and EAP-H-a2 had clear DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activity, and could promote the secretion of NO and the phagocytic activities of RAW 264.7 and THP cells, which showed clear antioxidant and immuno-regulatory activity. These results indicated that Elaeagnus angustifolia L fruit acidic polysaccharides may have potential value in the pharmaceutical and functional food industries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tau is an established substrate for gingipains secreted by Porphyromonas gingivalis. Hyperphosphorylation of tau and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) formation is a defining lesion of Alzheimer's disease (AD) where NFT distribution is related to Braak stage and disease severity. OBJECTIVE: To assess gingipains'-fragmented tau peptides for their antimicrobial properties and for the likelihood of paired helical/straight filament (PHF/SF) formation with implications for the NFT lesion. METHODS: Seven non-phosphorylated (A-G) and three phosphorylated (A-C) tau peptides, were tested for antimicrobial properties against P. gingivalis. Polarizing light properties were determined using Congo Red staining. Secondary and tertiary structures of peptides B-F were determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and circular dichroism (CD) was undertaken for the soluble peptides A in phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated states. RESULTS: Phosphorylated tau peptide A displayed a significant effect against planktonic P. gingivalis. The CD results demonstrated that both peptides A, in phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated states, in aqueous solution, adopted mainly ß-type structures. Non-phosphorylated peptides B-F and phosphorylated peptides B-C were insoluble and fibrillar under the TEM. The secondary and tertiary structures of the non-phosphorylated peptide B demonstrated fewer helical twists, whereas peptide C displayed significantly more helical twists along the whole fiber(s) length following its phosphorylation. CONCLUSION: Phosphorylated peptide A reduced P. gingivalis viability. CD spectroscopy demonstrated the phosphorylated and the non-phosphorylated peptide A predominantly formed from ß-sheet structures in aqueous solution with potential antimicrobial activity. Phosphorylation of tau peptides physically changed their tertiary structure into PHFs with potential for self-aggregation and binding to the NFT lesion.

RESUMO

Around 6.6 million tons of spent coffee is produced per year, resulting in resources loss and potential environmental risks. Hence, a green technique is required to reuse the spent coffee grains. In this study, coffee grounds were burnt at 900 °C to generate the biochar (BC) for the synthesis of the porous adsorbent (ZIF-8 @BC) by growing ZIF-8 on the surface of BC. We applied the well-prepared ZIF-8 @BC to remove Congo red (CR) in water. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 @BC on Congo red in water was up to 1080.4 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that of many different types of BCs reported in previous studies. The reasons for its highly efficient adsorption of CR probably was attributed to metal ions and coordinatively unsaturated sites in the material. Also, BC enabled the less aggregation of ZIF-8 to provide sufficient specific surface area for CR adsorption. From the analysis of the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, the adsorption of ZIF-8 @BC on CR was a homogeneously chemical adsorption process regulated by electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking and metal coordination.

RESUMO

In this study, readily available inexpensive water treatment sludge (WTS) was used to prepare adsorbent for the removal of Congo red (CR) and tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions. The structural characteristics and adsorption properties of WTS biochar were characterised via scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. In batch experiments, the adsorption factors, kinetics, isothermal curves and thermodynamics of the adsorption properties were investigated. The optimum preparation condition of WTS biochar was 400 °C for 4 h under O2-limited pyrolysis, which exhibited increased specific surface area and pore structures. The best adsorption was observed when the pH of the CR and TC solutions was 7 and 4, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the main control step was the chemical adsorption process. Isotherm data were best described by the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacities for CR and TC were 116.4 and 58.5 mg·g-1, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. According to the analysis, the adsorption mechanism of CR could be attributed to electrostatic attraction, π-π conjugation and hydrogen bonding, whereas that of TC was potentially associated with cation exchange, complex precipitation, π-π conjugation and hydrogen bonding.

RESUMO

In this work, Aspergillus terreus GS28 and Aspergillus flavus CR500 isolated from industrial waste sludge examined for the decolorization of Congo red (CR) dye. The rate of CR decolorization raised due to optimum pH, temperature, carbon, nitrogen, and heavy metals. In the comparative study, A. terreus has the maximum ability (95%) to decolorize CR (≈ 100 mg L-1) as compared with A. flavus (92.96%) under optimized condition after 120 h. GC-MS and FTIR analysis of the fungal-metabolite and fungal-biomass shows bio-degradation and biosorption processes respectively. The degraded products were benzenepropanic (Rt-26.147), 3, 4-diaminonapthelene-1-sulfonic acid, and benzenedicarboxylic acid (Rt-26.660) by A. terreus, and benzenedicarboxylic acid (Rt-41.467) by A. flavus. The phytotoxicity assay revealed that a decrease in toxicity of the degraded product towards the growth and germination rate of two plant seeds compared to CR. Thus, the finding suggests that both the fungi act promising CR remediation candidates, induces restoration of CR polluted wastewater and save soil-land.

RESUMO

Ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-functionalized graphene was synthesized from Nigerian coal using a chemical exfoliation method and the graphene was applied for the removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solutions. The synthesized coal graphene and the raw coal were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, measurement of pHpzc (pH of point of zero charge), and Boehm titrations. The SEM data revealed surface roughness which is enhanced in the prepared graphene while the EDX revealed an increase in carbon content, the main constituent of graphene, from about 26% in the raw coal to about 80% in the prepared graphene. Various adsorption variables, such as pH, contact time, concentration of Congo red, and temperature, were varied for the removal of the dye using raw coal and the synthesized coal graphene. The Liu isotherm gave the best fit of the equilibrium data than the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. The maximum adsorption capacities of the raw coal and synthesized coal graphene at 25°C are 109.1 mg/g and 129.0 mg/g, respectively. The Avrami fractional-order kinetic model was the best model for description of the kinetic data. The model had the lowest values of standard deviation than the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The adsorption process of the two materials occurred via two stages as proved by intraparticle diffusion model. The adsorption process of the Congo red removal was spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic. The study conclusively revealed the graphene nanomaterial to be a viable adsorbent for textile wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Size-controlled Pb0.06Fe0.7O3 nanoparticles (Pb-FeONPs) were fabricated by the thermal co-precipitation method and characterized by FE-SEM, EDX, XRD, and IR techniques. The SEM and XRD images showed the average size distribution and average crystallite size of 19.21 nm and 4.9 nm, respectively. The kinetic model of Congo Red (CR) adsorption onto Pb-FeONPs was verified and found to be a pseudo-second-order reaction. The Langmuir plot was better fitted (R2 = 0.990) than other isotherm models with a Qmax (mg/g) of 500 for Congo Red (CR) dye in 40 min. The double-layer statistical physics model based on two energies was used to calculate the significant parameters. The n (stoichiometric coefficient) values obtained from the statistical physics double-layer model were found to be 0.599, 0.593, and 0.565, which are less than 1, indicating the multi-docking process. The regeneration of Pb-FeONPs was used for up to 5 cycles effectively, making the material highly economical. The Pb-FeONPs were fruitfully applied for the removal of CR dye from wastewater on a laboratory and industrial scale.

RESUMO

AIMS: The adsorption behaviour and mechanisms of the surface modified activated carbon with bacteria was evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: 16S rRNA was employed to identify the hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The bacteria was characterized by TEM and electron microscope. The surface modified activated carbon with bacteria was characterized by SEM. The adsorption behaviour was tested by static adsorption and dynamic adsorption. CONCLUSION: The adsorption efficiency of the modified activated carbon was high when pH was weak acidic, and the adsorption capacity increased with the increase of temperature ranging from 20 to 35°C. The adsorption capacity peaked at 234·6 mg g-1 at 25°C, which was sixfold higher than that of activated carbon. The pseudo-first-order kinetic can more accurately assess Congo red adsorption on the two adsorbents. The adsorption of Congo red by bacteria surface modified activated carbon fitted well with the Langmuir's model. The adsorption process was endothermic, and the biological floccules were formed during the adsorption. The physical adsorption is the main driving force. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The results indicate that the bacteria surface-modified activated carbon can be used effectively as an adsorbent to eliminate Congo red from aqueous solutions.

RESUMO

In the present work, Zeolite A was modified by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMABr) for adsorption of the Congo red (CR) dye from synthetic aqueous solutions. The Modified Zeolite A (MZA) was characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR. The influence of solution pH (in the 4-12 range), ionic strength (0.1-1 M), contact time (180 min), initial CR concentration (20-60 mg/L), temperature (24-36 °C), and an adsorbent dose (1-3 g m/L) on the % dye removal and adsorbent capacity were studied. A combined effect of the initial CR concentration and temperature on the CR removal % by MZA was also studied by applying response surface methodology (RSM). Experimental values were in a good agreement with those predicated by a second-order quartic model. A maximum of 99.24% dye removal and adsorbent capacity of 21.11 mg/g was achieved under the following conditions: pH = 7, initial CR concentration = 60 mg/L, temperature = 24 °C, ionic strength = 0.1 M, adsorbent dose = 3 g/L and 90 min contact time. The equilibrium data were subjected to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms, with the latter providing the best fit while kinetic adsorption studies were conducted by applying three models. The results indicated that the removal process was best described by the pseudo-second-order model. The present study demonstrates that modified MZA can be utilized for the highly efficient CR dye removal.

RESUMO

In this research, the eco-friendly cationic surfactant modified walnut shell (WNS-CTAB) was synthesised to enhance the uptake for bisphenol A (BPA) and Congo red (CR) from aqueous solution. The characterisation of WNS-CTAB was performed using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. to know its physiochemical properties. The adsorption equilibrium results were best described by the Langmuir isotherm model, which confirmed the monolayer adsorption of the pollutant molecules onto the adsorbent's surface. The maximum monolayer adsorption quantity of WNS-CTAB was established to be 38.5 mg g-1 for BPA and 104.4 mg g-1 for CR at 303 K, respectively. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models described the adsorption kinetics of both BPA and CR. Furthermore, the intra-particle diffusion was applied to analyse the kinetic results and was established that the rate was not solely controlled by diffusion. The mechanisms associated with BPA and CR adsorption onto the WNS-CTAB may include van der Waals interaction, hydrophobic interaction, and electrostatic force. WNS-CTAB demonstrated a good reusability potential with desorption through three successive adsorption-desorption cycles performed in both experiments. Moreover, in the binary system, the adsorption capacity of BPA witnessed a 66% decrease while CR saw marginal reduction of 8.0 %. This suggests that WNS-CTAB had a higher affinity for binding to CR with higher selectivity as compared with BPA. Therefore, WNS-CTAB has exhibited huge potential to serve as a functional material for practical use in the treatment of wastewater.

RESUMO

This work aims to synthesize akaganeite nanoparticles (AKNPs) by using microwave and use them to adsorb Congo red dye (CR) from the aqueous solution. The AKNPs with an average particle size of about 50 nm in width and 100 nm in length could be fabricated in 20 min. The effects of pH, CR initial concentration, adsorption time, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption process were investigated and the artificial neural network (ANN) was used to analyze the adsorption data. The various ANN structures were examined in training the data to find the optimal model. The structure with training function, TRAINLM; adaptation learning function, LARNGDM; transfer function, LOGSIG (in hidden layer) and PURELIN (in output layer); and 10 neutrons in hidden layer having the highest correlation (R2 = 0.996) and the lowest MSE (4.405) is the optimal ANN structure. The consistency between the experimental data and the data predicted by the ANN model showed that the behavior of the adsorption process of CR onto AKNPs under different conditions can be estimated by the ANN model. The adsorption kinetics was studied by fitting the data into pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second-order model and governed by several steps. The adsorption isotherms at the different temperatures were studied by fitting the data to Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The R2 obtained from the Langmuir model was above 0.9 and the highest value in three of four temperatures, suggesting that the adsorption isotherms were the best fit to the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity was estimated to be more than 150 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies suggested that the adsorption of CR onto AKNPs was a spontaneous and endothermic process and physicochemical adsorption. The obtained results indicated the potential application of microwave-synthesize AKNPs for removing organic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Introduction: Waldenström's macroglobulinemia is a hematological neoplasm belonging to the group of monoclonal gammopathies, which includes systemic symptoms and those related to an increase in M paraprotein. Objective: To describe a case of cardiac amyloidosis associated with macroglobulinemia. Clinical case: Male patient who was admitted for asthenia, dysphonia, and who, during his evolution, developed progressive dyspnea, heart failure and pleural effusion. Additionally, echocardiography showed myocardial granular pattern, while pleural biopsy was positive for Congo red staining. Subsequently, he received treatment with bortezomib, dexamethasone and rituximab, with favorable evolution. Conclusions: In this disease, early diagnosis is an important advantage for survival. Therefore, its management is palliative of cardiac manifestations. The present case shows a diagnostic challenge, in which the less frequent etiologies of heart failure must be taken into account(AU)

RESUMO

Although there are multiple histochemical tracers available to label plaques and tangles in the brain to evaluate neuropathology in Alzheimer disease (AD), few of them are versatile in nature and compatible with immunohistochemical procedures. Congo Red (CR) is an anisotropic organic stain discovered to label amyloid beta (Aß) plaques in the brain. Unfortunately, its use is underappreciated due to its low resolution and brightness as stated in previous studies using bright field microscopy. Here, we modified a previous method to localize both plaques and tangles in brains from humans and a transgenic rodent model of AD for fluorescence microscopic visualization. The plaque staining affinities displayed by CR were compared with fibrillar pattern labeling seen with Thioflavin S. This study summarizes the optimization of protocols in which various parameters have been finetuned. To determine the target CR potentially binds, we have performed double labeling with different antibodies against Aß as well as phosphorylated Tau. The plaque staining affinities exhibited by CR are compared with those associated with the diffuse pattern of labeling seen with antibodies directed against different epitopes of Aß. Neither CP13, TNT2 or TOC1 binds all the neurofibrillary tangles as revealed by CR labeling in the human brain. Additionally, we also evaluated double labeling with AT8, AT180, and PHF1. Interestingly, PHF-1 shows 40% colocalization and AT8 shows 15% colocalization with NFT. Thus, CR is a much better marker to detect AD pathologies in human and rodent brains with higher fluorescence intensity relative to other conventional fluorescence markers.
